Bellambi

Postcode: 2518

Bellambi is a suburb in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia, in the City of Wollongong. It has a station (opened 1889)on the CityRail South Coast line. It had a population of 4,357 in 2001.

As Bellambi is a predominantly working class suburb, there is a high concentration of government funded living arrangements. Since, however, many residents of Bellambi have been able to purchase their homes, Bellambi has become a much more desirable place to live. It is situated directly north of Corrimal and east of Russell Vale. It has a beach, Bellambi Beach, on the Wollongong to Thirroul Bike Track.

In recent years, plans to shut down the nearby Sewerage Treatment Plant on Bellambi Point has enhanced the desirability of the area, due to it's popularity as a surfing spot, and proximity to beaches and Catholic secondary school, Holy Spirit College.

Bellambi lies on the flat northern Illawarra coastal plain, with views of the escarpment to the west, especially Broker's Nose, 440 metres high. To the east is Bellambi Beach and a creek inlet in a reserve, and to the south of that is Bellambi Harbour and Bellambi Point. There used to be a coal railway and jetty with a neighbouring lighthouse but these have since disappeared, as with the Sandon Point railway north at Bulli. At Bellambi Point is Bellambi Lagoon Reserve which protects the lagoon and small islands of that name, mostly forested in she-oaks. A small hill rises to about ten metres and has recently been fenced off due to erosion. The local Corrimal and Bellambi beaches are used frequently by surfers.
