Callala Bay

Callala Bay is a small town in New South Wales, Australia in the City of Shoalhaven. It is on Jervis Bay about 20 minutes drive from Nowra and 10 minutes from Culburra Beach.

The small townships of Callala Beach and Callala Bay are located on the northern shore of Jervis Bay, about 27km south-east of Nowra.

Historians are divided on whether the South Coast district takes its name from 'kallalla' the local Aboriginal word for fish, or from the Irish village of Calala, birthplace of Patrick Smith, one of the convicts assigned to pioneer homesteader Alexander Berry.

Whatever the derivation, Callala is a delightful area. The sheltered, white sandy beaches of northern Jervis Bay provide safe swimming, especially for families with young children and those who prefer still salt water swimming to the surf.

The sweeping beaches are equally popular among sailors, snorkellers and fisherfolk. The recently upgraded boat ramp at Callala Bay gives direct access to Jervis Bay which is being increasingly targeted by sailors, many of whom are members of the locally-based Cruising Yacht Club. The annual Callala Bay Triathlon also attracts its share of elite athletes to this picturesque area.
