Goolgowi is located in western New South Wales, Australia, around 650 km west of Sydney via the Mid-Western Highway and is the administrative centre of Carrathool Shire.

Set on the junction of the Mid-Western Highway and Kidman Way, Goolgowi is in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, producing both wheat and grapes. The fine pink clays quarried from local deposits are widely used by brick-makers and potters.

The history of the district is graphically captured in the Goolgowi Hall’s ‘soft sculpture curtain’ - a vividly coloured wall-hanging designed and created by local women.

West of town, Palmyra Reserve not only supplied Goolgowi's water, but is a sanctuary for waterfowl.

Twenty kilometres south lies Merriwagga, one of four towns which lay claim to Australia's last outpost of civilisation, the Black Stump. Merriwagga's main rival to the distinction is the north-western NSW town of Coolah, whose claim is bolstered by the fact that, in 1826, Governor Darling chose the nearby station, Black Stump Run, as the outer boundary for the lease or purchase of crown land.

The old Cobb & Co staging post of Gunbar, 32km to the west, is graced by the remarkable Memorial Church whose superb stained-glass windows are dedicated to the district’s pioneers.

At the 2001 census, Goolgowi had a population of 291. The town water is supplied via a bore and there is a separate non potable water supply to each household. It has a primary school and a 25m public swimming pool. General store, 2 Service Stations, Club, Hotel, 2 Motels, several Mechanic workshops and an Engineering Business.
