Hillston is a township in western New South Wales, Australia, in Carrathool Shire, built on the banks of the Lachlan River. It was founded in 1863 and at the 2001 census had a population of 1,209.

 

The traditional source of income are wheat and sheep, have been supplemented during the last ten years by extensive development in agriculture and horticulture.

 

Citrus Orchards, cotton and potatoes, lettuce seed farms, melons, onions and extensive cattle breeding activities are additional and diversified activities which enhance the area.

 

Hillston is known for its very long, straight main street. With the Lachlan River on its doorstep and two parks providing picnic areas right hown to the river's edge plus exceptional facilities, the town becomes a great place to sop and linger.One of the parks is the former site of the orignial Hillston Hall, and this now has well landscaped gardens which lead to the swining bridge across the River.

 

The Hillston Ex-Servicemen's Club provides first class entertainment and restaurant facilities with a top line dining room. The Club with its tennis court, cricket and football ground is within walking distance of the man-made Lake Woorabinda.

 

The Information Centre in Hillston will supply all the information you need. Hillston main street is a delightful walking tour for tourists, many shops still trading as in bygone days.
