Jugiong

Jugiong is a village community in the central east part of the Riverina. It is situated just off the Hume Highway, by road, about 30 kilometres south west from Bookham and 40 kilometres north east from Gundagai. It has a population within a 7 kilometre radius of approximately 250 people.

 

Jugiong, on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River was established in 1820. Hume & Hovell passed Jugiong on their expedition to Bass Strait in 1824. Henry O'Brien settled the first sheep station in the area in 1825. In 1829, Charles Sturt reached Jugiong on his journey down the Murrumbidgee River to find its mouth.

 

In 1844, the first Hotel was established but this was washed away in the disastrous flood of 1852. The present Hotel, "Sir George Tavern" was established in 1852 and is the oldest licensed hotel in Australia, remaining in the same family since 1844.

 

Ben Hall's gang committed the first killing on the 16th November 1864 in Jugiong. The gang bailed up nearly 60 travellers, captured a stage coach and shot down Sergeant Edmund Parry.

 

Jugiong was proclaimed a town on the 20th March 1885 after the establishment of the Catholic Church (1856), Post Office (1862), Church of England (1872), Police Station (1872), Jugiong Public School (1883). The pumping station was built in 1836 and pumps water from the Murrumbidgee River to over 110 kilometres away.
