KemptonPostcode: 7030 Kempton is a township on the Midland Highway (Tasmania) north of Hobart, Tasmania.
A bustling coaching town in the 1800s, Kempton is an historic town.
It was named after early administrator and businessman Anthony Fenn Kemp who established the property Mount Vernon immediately to the north of where the township later grew in the 1820s. A low rainfall region of plains and low hills, it is mostly used for grazing sheep.
Kempton still boasts many of the historic buildings that were once coaching inns, taverns and the old general stores.
