You won’t find much better beaches than exist around Pottsville, a pleasant coastal town about 20 minutes drive south from Tweed Heads on a scenic by-pass linking Kingscliff and the Pacific Highway hamlet of Mooball.

The by-pass skirts a sparsely populated beachfront boasting great fishing and surfing spots and a chain of well-appointed caravan parks. The coastal run begins at Kingscliff and you drive south through hamlets, including Boganbar and Hastings Point, before reaching Pottsville.

Nature apart, Pottsville's chief attraction is Pioneer Plantation, an award-winning complex anchored by a banana plantation 8km out of the township. The plantation features a white-knuckle, six-wheel-drive haul to the top of Banana Mountain, Friendship Farm and a wildlife sanctuary with kangaroos, wallabies, pademelons, koalas, emus, wombats and a waterfowl-rich lake.

There are bush trails on which you can work up an appetite before sampling the restaurant fare, which frequently features freshly caught seafood and home-grown coffee.
