Selwyn SnowfieldsPostcode: 2630 Selwyn Snowfields is a small ski resort in the northern part of the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, Australia, in the Snowy River Shire and Kosciuszko National Park. Selwyn is located near the town of Adaminaby and is close to Cabramurra, which is the highest town in Australia. It caters mainly for beginners and has a family friendly environment.
The resorts base elevation is 1492m and the highest point is 1614m Above Mean Sea Level this low altitude compared to the other ski resorts in the Snowy Mountains means it has trouble maintaining a good snow cover especially during the early and finishing parts of the season (June and september). The resort has snowmaking to try to combat this problem, though it doesn't regurlarly get cold enough to make snow because the Wet bulb temperature needs to be under -2C to make snow and at this altitude it only gets this cold about once a fortnight.
Selwyn Snowfields offers some of the best beginners skiing in NSW. Of the 45ha of developed terrain in the park, 40 per cent is dedicated to beginners. For first time skiers and snowboarders, or for anyone wishing to improve their turns, Selwyn Snowfields’ professional team of Snow Sports Instructors are some of the best in the business with programs available for those as young as three.
For those with some more experience under their belt, there are about 22ha of more difficult runs, with the remainder of the runs rated most difficult, or black. For 2007, the resort has turned some focus to boosting children’s attractions, this includes updating the Bogong Jumping Castle and introducing a run especially designated for bigger kids, dubbed ‘the junior riders and sliders’ section.
A wide range of cross country trails, snowplay areas and even a dedicated toboggan run and 2 snowtube parks complements downhill skiing. There are 45km of marked cross-country trails ranging from 2.5km to 15km in length. For more information about this town, click here |
