TahmoorPostcode: 2573 Tahmoor is a town in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia, in Wollondilly Shire. It has a station on the Main Southern railway line served by CityRail's Southern Highlands services. It has a population of 4,339, including 120 (2.8%) indigenous persons and 3,494 (81.3%) Australian-born persons.
Originally named Bargo South, it was a farming area on the old Hume Highway.
The new Main Southern Railway line was later established with a train station declared on the Southern Highlands rail line. This name was contested by a local businessman, who wished to establish a town called Bronzewing Park, but was rejected as the town was founded only slightly earlier by city rail as "Tahmoor", a local aboriginal term meaning "Bronzed Wing Pidgeon", a bird of common sight in the area.
Today Tahmoor is the unofficial centre of Wollondilly Shire, with new busineses drawn into the Wollondilly Shire area and establishing themselves in the business district in Tahmoor. For more information about this town, click here |
