Wamoon

Postcode: 2705

Wamoon is a small town in Leeton Shire in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. Wamoon is located 8km from Leeton along the Irrigation Way to the Leeton CBD and Henry Lawson Drive to the Leeton suburb of Wattle Hill. Wamoon provides a village of homes to the farmers of northern Leeton and there is a small primary school known as Wamoon Public School.

In 1993 Geographical Names Board of New South Wales deleted Wamoon when the village was removed from official government publication of locality names. In May 2006 the Geographical Names Board of New South Wales approved the reinstatement of Wamoon as a village.

Wamoon has the same advantages as Leeton when it comes to water. Being serviced by irrigation canals, part of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation scheme, Wamoon will not run out of water. The local farms, mostly oranges, but also rice and wine grapes, have no problems with getting water, although in lean years their alocation may be reduced.

There is no question about what sport rules in Wamoon, rugby league! And it is the Yanco Wamoon Hawks who they support. Being a joint effort with Yanco, the club has its origins in Wamoon. Over the years it has been very successful and always competitive. Their uniform has been similar to that of Manly Warringah, but no they have taken on their own identity. As the residents of Wamoon would cry, "Go the hawks!"
