Yerong Creek

Postcode: 2642

Yerong Creek is a small village situated in the Riverina area of southern New South Wales. It is about 46 kilometres south west of Wagga Wagga on the Olympic Highway. It is serviced twice daily by the Intercity Express Train XPT which travels along the Main Southern Railway line between Sydney to Melbourne. (There is no stop listed in timetables for Yerong Creek; the nearest stations are The Rock to the north, where the XPT stops by request, and Henty to the south.)

Just up the road is The Rock, a small town and a geological feature of the same name, discovered by Charles Sturt in 1834. The Rock and its surrounds are protected by a nature reserve. There's a challenging climb of some three kilometres up to the summit called the Yerong Walking Trail, but, be warned - tough is the operative word, and you should be in good shape before even thinking of tackling it.

This formation was first called Hanging Rock, but in 1874 a huge slab, which protruded from its eastern face, broke off, thus depriving the monolith of this singular feature and its more descriptive name.

Whilst Yerong Creek is predominantly a mixed farming and grazing area it holds a claim in Australian history when in 1991 the XPT established the Australian Rail Speed Record of 193 kilometres per hour between the nearby area known as Table Top and the township.
