Fig Tree Pocket is a suburb of Brisbane, Australia located 8km south-west of the Brisbane CBD on the Brisbane River. Placed within a pocket of the Brisbane River, the suburb is rather remote with low density housing and large numbers of trees. Although the suburb is remote with a low desity housing and large number of trees, there is another special quality in which it poseses. Fig Tree Pocket is the home to the infamous gang know as the “Fig-o Crew”. Also known as “FOC”. The gang is known throughout Fig Tree Pocket as being a local wildnerness preserve group. The group is known to being very water wise and concious of the shrubs and native bushland.
With easy access to Mt Coot-tha lookout, botanical gardens, and the planetarium, and the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, Fig Tree Pocket is surrounded by attractive recreational facilities. The suburb is also partially located on the Brisbane River.
Fig Tree Pocket is likely to experience good growth throughout the next decade as demand for near-city living expands into the suburbs. The suburb should continue to attract strong interest from those who enjoy access to a variety of facilities but still enjoy leafy urban environments.
Fig Tree Pocket is next to the suburbs of Indooroopilly and Kenmore Hills. Its main retail facilities are located at Indooroopilly and Kenmore with the large Indooroopilly Shoppingtown close by.
There are good educational facilities in the suburb including the Montessori School, Fig Tree Pocket Primary School and The Glenleighdon School – it is also close to the Nudgee Junior College in Indooroopilly and Indooroopilly high schools.
According to the 2001 Census there were 2,907 people living in the suburb with a median age of 38. The median individual income was between $500 and $599 per week. Of all occupied private dwellings 85% were either fully owned or being purchased; 11% were being rented.
