Hemmant

Postcode: 4174

Hemmant is a suburb of Brisbane, Australia. It is 10 km east of the CBD located on the Brisbane River. Hemmant was originally known as “Doughboy Creek”.

Partially located along the Brisbane River the Lytton/Hemmant area – approximately 20-25 minutes from the Brisbane CBD – is a mix of commercial and industrial plants, residential housing and a few small farms.

The Whyte Ampol Oil Refinery uses a large area of Lytton close to the mouth of the Brisbane River. However the adjacent Fort Lytton National Park offers good recreational facilities in the form of good walk and bikeways.

For more modern entertainment Lytton residents – mostly a mix of young families working in the area – are approximately 5-6km from the center of Wynnum and the shops and bayside boulevards.

Although private transport is more feasible, Hemmant rail station is located in the centre of the suburb. Hemmant State Primary School is supplemented by state and private schools located in neighbouring Murrarie, Wynnum West and Tingalpa.

As with its neighbouring suburb of Murrarie, the Lytton/Hemmant area has many older style homes built in the post war period. Being relatively close to the City, the suburb is assured future popularity and good house price growth.

According to the 2001 Census (Hemmant was listed together with Lytton) there were 2,189 people living in the area with a median age of 31. The median individual income was between $400 and $499 per week. Of all occupied private dwellings 72% were either fully owned or being purchased; 22% were being rented.
