Macknade

Postcode: 4850

A few kilometres east of Ingham, Macknade nestles in the midst of thousands of acres of sugar cane country in the shadow of awesome Hinchinbrook Island – arguably Australia’s most beautiful.

Just offshore are smaller islands with magic names, like Pelorus, Orpheus and Phantome. Lucinda, and its harbour named Dungeness, which boasts the world’s longest offshore sugar-loading jetty, is just a few kilometres away.

It’s from here that charter boats leave for tours of Hinchinbrook Channel and the island itself, and to take you to some of the most prolific fishing grounds in north Queensland.

This is a great sports fishing spot and you can choose to join a charter safari or hire a dinghy to plan your own personal pursuit of the famous barramundi. But be sure to check your dates. The Queensland Government is continually reviewing its fish stocks and species such as barramundi are off-limits for short periods of the year.
