Woongoolba

Postcode: 4207

Deep in sugar country between the northern Gold Coast’s Pimpama and Logan rivers, Woongoolba is close to the fishing havens of Cabbage Tree Point and Jacobs Well, where you’ll find the fisherfolk lined up to launch their tinnies just about every day of the week.

Out they go to the abundant fishing grounds around South and North Stradbroke Islands, Macleay Island, Russell Island, and the rest. Apart from fisherfolk, these wind-protected waterways are also haunted by boaties, water-skiers and jetskiers.

Jacob’s Well, which is 10km from Woongoolba and Cabbage Tree Point, is regarded as the southern gateway to Moreton Bay Marine Park, an island-dotted, idyllic waterway which stretches from the Gold Coast to Brisbane. The bay and its island chain are home to turtles, dugongs and 50,000 shore birds, some of which fly 11,000km in an annual migration.

By the way, they still operate Queensland’s second largest sugar mill at Woongoolba.
