Toongabbie is a small rural town located in South Eastern Victoria, 177 kilometres from the city of Melbourne.

In late 1862 gold was discovered in the north-west of Toongabbie. The goldfield, first known as Stringer’s Creek and then renamed to Walhalla, was one of the richest gold fields in all of Victoria at the time.

During the 1880s and 1890s, Toongabbie had a number of stores, three hotels, a school, a mechanics’ institute, a couple of churches as well as a police station.
